The New Mainstream- Journalists Redefining Their Industry

Description:
As media converges online, journalism advocates need to understand the challenge from multiple angles, especially from the inside. This panel will explore the perspective of mainstream media professionals who are quietly leading their own movement to redefine and modernize their trade and bring about a golden age of journalism.

Questions:

1. What is at the root of the, sometimes, adversarial relationship between citizen (blogger) and MSM journalists, what can be done about it, and is it necessary to do something about it?
2. How can new media tools create political coverage that is authentic, diverse and spin-free, and how is this different, from political coverage with traditional media roots?
3. Can mainstream and independent media/citizen journalism work together, and benefit/feed off each other rather than being seen as paradoxical?
4. What internal contexts do media reform advocates need to be aware and what would activists find most surprising if they had a view from the inside?
5. In the battle for modernizing journalism, is there a generational divide or a digital divide within the industry?
6. Which works better for interactive features - commonly available social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter or website specific tools (a “your thoughts” button, for example) and what kinds of tools are needed but have yet to be created?
7. In reporting the news, what are the tensions/balances in presenting perspectives from both citizen and professional journalists?
8. What characteristics will the “Tim Russert” of our generation have and how does this compare to the traditional Sunday talk show lineup?
9. What old media values are no longer appropriate for a modern media and what values need to be retained?
10. Why should a young person choose journalism as a career?

    PLEASE, keep thinking that.

Yes, non-progressives are not nearly as computer savy as progressives are!

    We will NEVER catch up!

I'm so discourged when you tell me what to think!

    What will I do?

    Oh, I know!

    1. I have already studied the 12 rules for radicals.

    2. I have already committed to work harder than you.

    3. I have already converted 11 Dems and Repubs to Independents.

    4. I am actively dialoguing 6 progressives and working on THEM to convert. I am also demonstrating that I am rational, civil, courteous, and Constitutionally grounded.

    So..........

Keep doin' what you're doin.. and I will do the same.

Let's see how the 2010 elections turn out!

The challenges of change are always hard. It is important that we begin to unpack those challenges that confront this nation and realize that we each have a role that requires us to change and become more responsible for shaping our own future.
